THE CAPTAIN

Capt Eddie Beneduci came to this country from Italy in 1956, on the last trip the Andrea Doria made before it was sunk in a collision off of Martha’s Vineyard.

He worked here as a mechanic, but would often come to Montauk with his friends to fish on Capt Carl Forsberg’s original VIKING STAR. On one trip to Coxes Ledge, the boat had a problem with one of it’s engines and Carl was sweating it out down in the engine room trying to remedy the situation without much luck. Eddie pitched in and was able to get the engine running again, and Carl rewarded him with a season’s pass on the boat, which evolved into a weekends mating job. From then on he was locked into fishing.

He has fished with many of Long Islands legends of the party boat world, and was on a trip with Capt Jay Porter when they discovered the Bacardi, and Suffolk Wreck, and was instrumental in some of the first trips out of Montauk to fish the fluke and porgie grounds off of Noman's Island.

However, for most of his career he fished commercially here in Montauk, starting with pinhooking in an 18’ skiff with a Scott Atwater outboard and working his way up to a 35’ Bruno & Stillman, a workhorse of commercial small boat fishing. It was while seabass fishing at New Grounds that a world record seabass of xxx labs was caught on his boat by Sal Cestaro.

Eventually he moved to the Tampa area of Florida, where he continued commercial fishing on multi day trips into the Gulf of Mexico for snapper and grouper, but in 1992 he returned to Montauk to work with the Viking Fleet and in a1994, he bought the MARLIN V and started sailing out of Salivar’s Dock.

In 1997, he up graded to the MARLIN VI and in 2004 jumped up in class once again with the 85’ MARLIN VI PRINCESS.
